About Us

Empowering the LBTQ-GNC Community in Coastal Kenya

impact

Our strategic objective

To build power from the ground up by enabling LBTQ-GNC persons to lead the initiatives that affect their lives; through evidence-based advocacy, healing-centered programs, economic justice, and decentralized organizing.

She Huru’s strategic niche lies in addressing economic violence as a root cause of intimate partner and structural violence.

By applying a queer-feminist and intersectional lens, She Huru links economic justice to mental health, climate resilience, SRHR, and HIV response, ensuring that no struggle is fought in isolation.

About Us

Who is She Huru?

She Huru is a queer-feminist organization based in Mombasa, Kenya, advancing the rights, dignity, and holistic well-being of lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, and gender non-conforming (LBTQ-GNC) persons.

Founded in 2022 and formally registered in 2024, She Huru emerged from a collective response to the increasing cases of violence against LBTQ-GNC persons in the coastal region.

What began as a community-led effort to raise awareness and prevent violence has evolved into a bold, intersectional movement addressing the root causes of oppression; economic exclusion, mental health struggles, discrimination, and structural inequality.

She Huru’s work is grounded in feminist organizing, healing justice, and community power, building spaces where LBTQ-GNC persons can heal, organize, and lead transformative change.

” We believe in creating an inclusive, just world where every LBTQ-GNC person is safe, respected, and empowered. “

Our Journey

The Beginning
She-Huru Initiative was founded to address the increasing cases increasing cases of violence within the LBTQ-GNC community. In its early stages, the movement focused solely on awareness and prevention of violence. As the organization grew, we realized that violence is often the result of various intersecting socio-economic issues, leading us to expand our scope.

Our Growth
By the end of our first year, we identified the need to address the underlying causes of violence, such as economic disenfranchisement, mental health struggles, and discrimination. This shift led to the development of holistic programs targeting a wide range of challenges, including Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), Climate Justice, HIV/AIDS, Economic Empowerment, and Mental Health.

Our Commitment
She-Huru Initiative is committed to building a world where LBTQ-GNC individuals can live free from violence and discrimination. We are actively working towards providing a comprehensive framework of advocacy, education, and referrals to support services. While we strive to address all forms of violence, ensure access to sexual and reproductive health, and promote mental health and economic empowerment, these efforts are ongoing, with the ultimate goal of creating lasting change in the lives of those we serve.

” Empowering our community means more than just addressing violence; it means creating a world where every individual’s rights, health, and dignity are fully upheld. “
